Van Nuys Airport Aviation Expo

Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce Luxury Summit 2008
Held in Beverly Hills, one of the luxury capitals of the world, Luxury Summit 2008 attracted more than 500 participants, ranging from investors and financiers to retail executives, bankers and other industry professionals. The event offered insight into the latest trends, forecasts and data in luxury consumerism (including luxury retail, hospitality, travel and more), and featured panel discussions by internationally known experts.

Van Nuys Airport Aviation Expo
Ranked the City of Los Angeles’ largest free family event, the Van Nuys Airport Aviation Expo enabled an estimated 350,000 spectators to experience civilian and military aircraft displays, aerial demonstrations and flyovers, and the opportunity to meet America’s finest fighter pilots. The air show was ranked the No. 1 aviation event in the nation by Airports Council International, the world’s leading aviation organization.

American Association of Airport Executives National Convention
The Los Angeles Convention of the American Association of Airport Executives marked the largest gathering of airport executives in the nation.  With the theme, “Lights, Camera, Aviation, “ the convention featured weeklong seminars and workshops, delegate and guest tours, an evening social event and formal banquet at the Bonaventure Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

Caring Counts Collection Drive
Flight crews and employees at Van Nuys Airport joined forces to mend hearts at Valentine’s Day by launching a collection drive for children, adults and families who are homeless. Sponsored by Clay Lacy Aviation, the “Caring Counts” collection drive encouraged airport employees to donate travel-size personal hygiene items for distribution to local shelters.  Flyers, posters and collection bins were placed at major aviation companies and local hotels with the tagline “Sometimes the Greatest Gifts Come in Travel-Size Packages.”  The drive raised more than 500 pounds of donated items.

Live USO (United Services Organization) Variety Show
Members of the public were invited to attend this live stage show to benefit the Bob Hope Hollywood USO, a nonprofit organization providing services to military members and their families. The show was hosted by Los Angeles radio personality Gary Bryan and featured celebrity appearances and entertainment, including performances by actress Connie Stevens, comedian Fred Travalena and musician Steven Bishop.        

The Sky’s the Limit Aviation Career Day
This exciting and interactive career day introduced the world of aviation, including career opportunities, to more than 1,400 students from 35 San Fernando Valley middle and high schools. One of many highlights included a motivational speech by Barrington Irving – who became the first African American pilot and youngest person ever to fly solo around the globe in 2007 at age 23 – and who made his first-ever Los Angeles appearance at this event.  Aviation Career Day offered nearly 60 interactive and hands-on displays, including a simulated classroom demonstrating student mechanics at work; a small-scale wind tunnel and aircraft flight simulator; and a state-of-the-art manufacturing and technology lab. Students also had the opportunity to get up close to high tech military jets and meet the pilots who fly them.

Flight Path to the Future Career Counselors Forum
This first-of-its kind forum – presented by Van Nuys Airport, the Los Angeles Unified School District and the Economic Alliance of the San Fernando Valley – provided San Fernando Valley high school career counselors, administrators and parent representatives the tools and resources needed to guide students interested in aviation and aerospace career paths. The forum included remarks from elected officials (including a representative from the governor’s office), two expert panels (with speakers from both aviation professional and trade occupations), exhibits, an airport tour and luncheon.

LIFE Food Drive
Marking the 25th anniversary of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s downtown headquarters building, a food drive was organized to collect non-perishable food items at business locations throughout downtown Los Angeles to benefit the LIFE (Love Is Feeding Everyone) organization. The kick-off event featured celebrity appearances and widespread media coverage.

Project Angel
The Mayor of Los Angeles announced at a press conference $1 million of total funds distributed to help impoverished Los Angeles residents pay their water and electric bills. The event marked a milestone in the Project ANGEL assistance program, bringing the total number of families assisted through a customer-pledge program to more than 10,000.

Electric Vehicle Roll-Out
City and regulatory officials held a news conference in downtown Los Angeles to roll out the first electric vehicle scheduled for production in the Southern California market. City and regulatory officials joined representatives of the Swedish company CleanAir to unveil the LA301, an all-new electric passenger car created to reduce air pollution in the region.
